Luddite Brewing Co

This new microbrewery opened on 9th April 2019 at the Calder Vale Hotel, Millfield Road, Horbury Junction WF4 5EB which first opened its doors as the Drop Inn as long ago as 1874. The brewery is the brainchild of three former Horbury School friends, pub owner Michael Portman's son Gary, Ian Sizer and Tim Murphy.

It is a 5-barrel plant, expected to brew twice weekly. The core beers are 1812 Bitter at 4.4%, a traditional brown beer commemorating the first Yorkshire Luddite raid on Foster's Mill which took place the first raid of the Yorkshire Luddites, which took place at Horbury on April 9th, 1812 , Smashing Saaz principally hopped with European Saaz hops and Smashing EKG at 4.7% with East Kent Goldings to the fore. "Smashing" being what the Luddites did to the machinery which they saw as a threat to their livelihoods. There is also a 4.3% Milk Stout.
