THE BREWERS
PRIDE reviewed by Colin Williams for the Summer 2007 Edition of O-to-K
Recently it was suggested that Wakefield Camra might care
to feature the Brewers Pride in our "Fine Dining" column. Now I've
never heard this column described as such before but I certainly felt that it
was time to check the pub out to see what was on offer for an aspiring bon
viveur.
Apparently they have a new chef who formerly worked at
another establishment on our patch which was, I must say, a heck of a lot easier
to get to by public transport. Bus no 102 will take you to the Brewers Pride but
be aware that your last bus to Wakefield departs at 14.24. Late revellers will
however be relieved to learn that on Saturdays the last bus goes at 17.19. As
for Sundays, well what do you think?
So I got off the bus at Healey Low Mill Road eagerly
anticipating the fine dining, not to mention the fine ales, that might be in
store. On that particular day there were not any Ossett Ales on the bar but
there was plenty of good ale on offer, including White Lion, Rudgate Ruby Mild
and a couple of rocket fuels from Kelham Island. I sampled Old Mill Bitter and
Cottage Flying Scotsman and was impressed with the ales and also the reasonable
prices charged for them.
And so to the "Roast Restaurant" menu, launched
on April 22nd. There are some "Light Snacks" at lunchtimes but I had
come to sample the menu. There were a few appetising-sounding starters on offer
at 3.95, lots of roast main courses such as roast beef, roast turkey, roast
ham, roast duck, roasted red and green peppers and, looking a little out of
place, baked cod, all at 7.95. A few desserts at 3.75 complete the tempting
offerings on the printed menu but there was also a specials board featuring
broccoli and potato soup, poached haddock and fresh tuna steak.
I rather fancied the "Continental Meat Platter"
for starter. "Traditional Prawn Cocktail" might have gone well with
traditional ales but then I decided I fancied the Seafood Roulade even more.
Over to the menu: "A blend of mixed seafood, eggs and cream accompanied by
fresh tartare sauce and fresh spinach". This truly fabulous starter left me
in no doubt; we really are talking fine dining, beautifully presented and at
sensible prices. I selected the roast ham for main course "accompanied by a
delicious spinach and pear puree". This too was excellent, interestingly
laid out and served with tasty vegetables. Portions are just right.
The next piece of good fortune was that there was plenty of
time for a pudding before the last bus. The Chocolate Mousse is shamelessly
decadent, served in a large glass, and topped with orange cream. Then a beer-mat
shaped piece of chocolate is placed over the glass and on top of that are
strawberries and raspberries. Wonderful!
Food is served 12.00-15.00 Monday-Saturday and 19.00-21.00 Tuesday-Thursday. On Wednesday evenings they might have a theme such as steak, curry or pie night but the full menu is still available. This is outstanding pub food with excellent ale available and all at very reasonable cost. Bons viveurs are indeed well catered for.
