A Good Meal and a Decent Pint

The George, Ossett

The George in Ossett can be found on Bank Street next to a rather grand-looking police station. From the Town Hall, follow the pedestrianised area, carry straight on when it becomes a road and look out for ye olde Tetley (as opposed to Tetley's) sign on your right. Meals are served 12-2 Tues-Fri and 12-4 Sunday.

When I arrived for lunch, a light and spacious dining area was set out and ready including a small no-smoking zone. Business seemed quite good for a Tuesday. Tetley Bitter (2.30) and Taylor's Landlord (2.50) were on offer and so was a small but varied menu. Dishes included lasagne and chips (5.50), cod and chips (4.75), chicken tikka with chips or rice (5.50) and steak and Guinness casserole (4.95). There were also hot and cold sandwiches available, mostly from 2 to 3, all served in "scufflers" which I had never come across before. A Yahoo search later came up with "a big breadcakey thing". Cheeseburgers seemed popular and these scufflers that they were served in were certainly large.

There is a typical Sunday lunch menu served, rather predictably, on Sundays (roasts 5.25).

A children's menu features items such as chicken nuggets and chips (2) and OAPs are invited to partake of these modestly priced offerings. Tea (65p) and coffee (75p) are available and a notice at the bar informed customers that "Steak Canadians are back". Come to think of it, I hadn't seen one for a while, but there they were at 2.95, served with chips and (you guessed it) in a scuffler.

I opted for the steak and Guinness casserole which turned out to be a satisfyingly large portion of meat with carrots and gravy, served in a large Yorkshire pudding. It was lucky I got there early as it was the last one. From the small sweet menu I sampled a reassuringly traditional jam sponge with custard. This was really enjoyable and cost a mere 1.95.

On the wall is a framed copy of a newspaper review of the George. The correspondent enjoyed his Sunday roast, but described the Landlord as being "a bit hoppy", pronouncing the Tetley Bitter to be "far superior". The Landlord tasted very good to me, but what do I know?
