A Good Meal and a Decent Pint

The Jacobean Pub at Rogerthorpe Manor

This time we visit the Jacobean Pub, part of the Best Western Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel on Thorpe Lane (B6474) between Thorpe Audlin and Badsworth. Buses 46 and 47 stop nearby at Thorpe Gate, alternatively take the 485 to Badsworth Church followed by a pleasant walk along a fancy new footpath.

The pub was added to the Manor in 1997 but it blends in so well that it looks much older. It was built "to cater for everyone in Badsworth and the locality who likes to drink traditional ales in a traditional pub atmosphere". What's Brewing recently announced that it had been accepted into the Cask Marque scheme so we thought it was worth a look.

On the bar we found something of a family reunion. Theakston's Best Bitter and Black Sheep Bitter were both on offer at 2.55. Since the pub is part of a hotel, an extensive menu is available so time was needed to make a choice.

If you are fortunate enough to look over 60 you have a real bargain in store. Two courses plus tea or coffee can be had every day except Sundays for 5.65. On Sundays they concentrate on a carvery menu (from 6.95 12:00-18:00) Quiz night on Tuesdays at 20:45 features a "complimentary buffet" at half time. A plasma screen displayed various pieces of information including the fact that the head chef from 1993-1998 is back. Another plasma screen showed Sky Sports with the sound turned down.

The menu has been re-written since a previous visit and it looks the better for it. Gone are the "full bag of mashings" and the "certain mushiness of peas" although they do let their hair down on the specials board, where many items were served "upon" something else. To give you a flavour, for starter I selected "Goat's cheese placed upon a herb croton baked in the oven dressed in pesto and balsamic vinegar" (4.95). It was superb, as was the side salad. Between us we also feasted upon chicken liver pt (4.50), moussaka (7.95) and seafood ragot (8.95) and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Finally, from a list written on a mirror entitled "Just Desserts" we chose an excellent lemon tart (3.95)

Make no mistake, this is restaurant quality food at prices you could easily pay for inferior fayre elsewhere (mentioning no chains). Steaks, fish and chips and steak pie (7.95 "our best seller") are all there too along with vegetarian options. We'll be back as there are quite a few more things we'd like to try.
