The Cross Keys
Old Snydale

a review by Pat Wallis in the Autumn 2002 edition of O-to-K
If
its good on a very wet Monday lunch time it must be good ! Well lets face
it, a lot of pubs dont serve meals on a Monday either, it often seems to be
the day off.
The
Cross Keys is a rural pub where you really do feel that you are in the country.
It is within easy reach of the Five Towns especially Normanton and only a ten
minute or so drive from Wakefield. The 147 bus runs past the door hourly.
The
pub has recently undergone a most sympathetic refurbishment which for me has
maintained its original character and atmosphere while appearing to add more
space..
On
the wet Monday when we lunched there, we were still met with very cheerful and
swift service . Our fellow diners seemed to be business people presumably from
the surrounding business parks.
The
pub has always had a good reputation for its cask ale and we were glad to find
that it has in no way suffered during the alterations. There were three cask
ales on : John Smiths Bitter,
Theakstons Lightfoot from Masham, refreshing at 4.3, but the Brains
Rev James at 4.5 was lovely ! (Bobs word was luscious ) Another
unusual guest spotted recently was Youngers Monk, so 10/10 for interesting beers
It
is an all- day pub with both lunches and evening meals but, at the time of
writing, there is a limited lunch time menu while they await the arrival of
their new chef. Nevertheless, we had two really big well filled baguettes. There
was a choice between cheese, turkey, tuna or prawn all accompanied by a bowl of
real hand-cut fresh chips and a basic salad ( all this for the princely sum of
1.95 quite unbelievably good value
as we told the lady from the kitchen.) There
were sweets available : chocolate
gateau ; Kirsch gateau; ice cream crunch; lemon meringue and strawberry
cheesecake but as the first course
had been so filling, we didnt try these!
So, an altogether enjoyable visit. Our one regret, we were unable to sit out on the most attractive terrace behind the pub and look at the open fields perhaps the next time . Pat Wallis
