DRINKING IN WAKEFIELD (for the over-18’s)
You’ve
no doubt heard of
Wakefield
’s famous Westgate Run. If you have time to spend in the City and you
actually enjoy the taste of real beer in unhurried
surroundings, we’ve put together a more congenial amble taking in most of the
City’s best pubs which share your philosophy on decent ale. If you look at
the map, it’s virtually a circuit, so start where you like—you probably
won’t get all the way round in one session as it’s too good to rush! So
Good Luck and Good Drinking!
From Light Waves cross
Marsh Way
and turn left skirting the Bus Station. Take the 1st left after the
shops into
Westmoreland Street
and continue to the bottom of the hill where you turn left into
Vicarage Street
. The Red
Shed [
Wakefield
Labour Club] (4
handpulls) is 200
yards on your right. Turn left on leaving the Shed, follow the road round to
the right & turn left into Kirkgate, the Six
Chimneys (Wetherspoons ) is 100 yards on your left. Turn left
from the Six Chimneys and 200 yards down the road is the Harewood
Arms (Tetley Bitter & Taylor’s
Landlord plus 2 guests). On leaving cross the road and continue down
Kirkgate to the roundabout, Fernandes
Brewery Tap (10 handpulls), is in Avison Yard on your
right just after the Indian Takeaway. From Fernandes turn right to Kirkgate,
then left to the traffic lights at the end of
George Street
, where you turn left. Cross over the road and after about 400 yards go
straight on at the at the lights. Bull
& Fairhouse (ex-O’Donoghues)
(6 Handpulls) now a Great Heck Brewery tied house is next to the Graziers after
the road junction. Turn left on leaving the B & F and left onto
Market Street
to the top of the hill. Left onto Westgate and after about 200 yards turn left,
Brown-signed for the Bank House Hotel, The
Hop (8 handpulls) is immediately after this. On leaving go through the gate
opposite and across the car park, cross the road and you will find Harry’s
Bar (8 handpulls) at the back of the car park. After Harry’s
Bar turn left & walk through the arch in front of you & turn left down
Westgate. Cross over the road, under the railway bridge and
Clark
’s Brewery Tap Henry Boon’s
(5 handpulls) is on your right. If you’re going to stick to the trail
turn right on leaving Henry Boons & proceed down Westgate. The Redoubt
(Tetley Dark Mild & Bitter,
Taylor
’s Landlord), the furthest point for the intrepid drinkers among you is not
far after the church on the
Huddersfield
road. On leaving the Redoubt, look in at the White
Hart on Westgate End.
Continue to the top of Westgate and
veer left of the distinctive curved end of the former Yorkshire
Bank into
Silver St
and then first left up
King Street
for about 200 yards to the Inns of Court.
On leaving the pub go back down King Street and turn left, then left again just
before Barclays Bank into George & Crown Yard where you will find Elliotts
Bar at No. 22 (open evenings only). This is a Belgian-style bar
with a range of bottled & draught Belgian beers! Retrace your steps back
down the alley and turn left, at the
Wood Street
lights cross Westgate to the Black Rock (Tetley
Bitter & Guest Beers). Back
across Westgate and turn right to the Bull Ring and left into Northgate,
continue to the roundabout and across the road you will see the last pub on the
trail which is the College,
from here turn right and it is a short walk back to Light Waves. We hope you
have enjoyed the Festival and find this Ale Trail useful. There are other
good pubs in
Wakefield
but space precludes their inclusion. You can, of course, do the Trail in
reverse or even just visit the pubs of your choice.
