Festivalgoers' Choice 2011, ? 

decided by ballot slips handed in by people attending the festival. Please take part in this process again in 2012, and include your bottled beer, cider and perry choices, too.

We are very grateful to all the "punters" who take the trouble to nominate their Festivalgoers' Choice, which does mean that we are able to give accolades to a good number of the excellent and varied beers which were on offer. In 2011, 109 of about 130 different cask ales received a nomination from someone.

THE WAKEFIELD 2011 "TOP TEN"

1 Five Towns Outwood, Wakefield West Yorkshire Tyketanic 6.3 a pale coloured strong ale bursting with flavour, packing a massive citrus hit, mainly of rich Seville orange, bitter and a bit like marmalade without the sweetness
2 Fernandes Wakefield Derbyshire Vanilla Porter 5.0  a delicious dark beer where vanilla is a perfect balance to the roastiness of the dark malt
3 Fullers Chiswick, West London Golden Pride 8.5 named "the cognac of beers" by Michael Jackson, a deep amber beer whose rich maltiness is balanced by complex hop notes from Northdown, Challenger and Target
4 North Riding Scarborough North Yorkshire Neilson's Sauvin 3.7 a pale hoppy bitter made with the hop of the moment, from New Zealand, described as "waves of aggressive gooseberry" (Neilson is the brewer's surname!)
5 Brass Castle Pocklington North Yorkshire Bad Kitty 5.5 a chewy chocolate vanilla dream of a porter, champion beer at the 2011 York Festival, vegan friendly
5 Mallinsons Lindley, Huddersfield West Yorkshire Nelson Sauvin 3.8 a golden coloured ale, with a lovely citrusy grapefruit nose, a hoppy citrus taste followed by a similar finish
7 Tigertops Flanshaw, Wakefield West Yorkshire Black Art 4.5  a black bitter, not a stout or porter, more of a black IPA with lots of hops all the way through
8 Five Towns Outwood, Wakefield West Yorkshire V2 Schneider 5.6 a Bavarian style dark wheat beer with hints of chocolate and melon, brewed originally for the Oktoberfest at the Cricketers, Horbury
8 Rat Huddersfield West Yorkshire King Rat IPA 5.0 a beer that is all about hops, the Nelson Sauvin variety from New Zealand giving a unique "white-winey" aroma and enduring aftertaste, high bitterness balanced nicely by a residual malty sweetness
10 Allendale Allendale near Hexham Northumberland Weizen 4.8 a Belgian style wheat beer

At our festival last year, part of the assessment took place for Champion Beer of Britain 2012. On the Friday of the festival, six short-listed Yorkshire-brewed Milds were judged by a tasting panel for taste (main criterion) and also aroma, aftertaste, general appearance and colour. The identity of the beers was not given to the judges. Yorkshire's Top Mild was Rudgate Ruby Mild. Second was Oakwell Dark Mild. The other finalists were, in no particular order, Fernandes Malt Shovel Mild, Copper Dragon Black Gold, Timothy Taylor Golden Best and Naylors Pinnacle Mild.

These prizes were won in our daily raffles in 2011:

A day with the brewers at Ossett went to David from Leeds.

A day for two with the brewer at Great Heck was won by festivalgoer Richard Walsh from Halifax.

A day at Five Towns Brewery for herself and a friend was won by Tiffany Crowcroft from Wakefield

A meal for two at the Brown Cow, Ackworth was won by festivalgoer David Kretzmer. We thank the pub for this kind donation.  

A meal for two, kindly donated by the New Inn at Walton, was won by Karen and Dave Gibbs from Dunville near Hatfield

Sunday lunch for two kindly donated by the Angel at Ackworth went to Mike Ryan from Wakefield.

A meal for two with drinks at the Glassblower Castleford was won by the Cowleys from Goole.

Fernandes Brewery mirrors were won by Richie Davies from Sandal and festivalgoer Steve.

Roger Perrell from Wakefield and Paul Stainer from Darrington each won a 10 litre beerbox of Acorn beer to be collected from the brewery any time up to the end of the year, ideal for Christmas or New Year.

Ben Young from Havercroft won a big wad of Wetherspoon vouchers.
