There is a free Wakefield City Bus that circles Wakefield city centre every 10 minutes during in the daytime Monday to Saturday. It starts at the Bus Station and visits both train stations and the Hepworth Gallery. It can be handy to use if you don't like walking. Below is a guide on some buses to use to get to other towns and villages in our area from Wakefield. Unless specified the service will be run by the main operator in the area which is Arriva. If using multiple buses then the West Yorkshire Day Saver ticket is the one to buy. There is Bus Only, Bus/Train and Group (up to 5 people) options.
Use the 485 service run by Globe. It is an hourly service that only runs during the daytime. Ackworth has a number of good real pubs to try. If you are there later into the evening then buses to Pontefract run later including the Stagecoach 28 service which only a 15 minute ride, this service in the other direction calls at Hemsworth also. You can certainly have days out that combine Ackworth, Hemsworth and Pontefract.
The 147 and 186 buses go through Altofts. If you use the 186 you can stop off in Heath at the Kings Arms on the way.
The 104 goes to Alverthorpe and will go past Alverthorpe WMC and the New Albion.
Use the 189, this runs every 15 minutes during the day but evening and Sunday services are less frequent. It calls at Normanton going past the Hark To Mopsey and also Whitwood so you can use this when Lost Cause have their monthly social.
Use the 116 and 122 services which will take you through Ossett first. The 122 service stops outside the Boot & Shoe. You can combine Ossett and Gawthorpe in one visit.
Use the 186 to get to Front Street in Glasshoughton or the 140 to get to the Junction 32 and Xscape complex.
To get to Healey and the Brewers 1841 and Ossett Brewery the only bus that goes here is the Globe 120 but it takes a massively convoluted route that unless you live on the route in the Wakefield area it is best to catch it to/from Ossett Bus Station, note that it only runs during the day time.
To get to Heath and the Kings Arms use the 186 bus. You can also use this bus to get to Altofts.
Use the 496 service which runs every 15 minutes during in the day but evening and Sunday services are less frequent. If you use the 195 service it does take longer but it goes through Wintersett so you can stop off at the Anglers Retreat.
The 126 and 232 services all go through Horbury. It is easy to combine a visit to Horbury with Ossett and the four places below in one day and they are all served on the same bus routes.
Horbury Bridge, Middlestown, Netherton and Overton
The 231 and 232 services go to these places. Use the 231 for Netherton and 232 for Middlestown and Overton. Both pass through Horbury Bridge.
To get the Calder Vale and Luddite Brewery use the 126 and get off at the bottom of Cluntergate (when the bus turns right off the A642 to head in to Horbury), cross the A642 and head down Daw Lane then Millfield Road and keep walking for about 10 minutes.
Use the 59 Stagecoach service. You can certainly combine visiting here and Sandal at the same time by using the 59 and 106 buses.
To get to the Bradley Arms use the 177 Castleford-Pontefract service run by Globe or the 144/146 Castleford-Pontefract service run by Ross Travel. The 147 Wakefield-Pontefract service goes close by but is about a 10 minute walk from the stop at a crossroads. Another option is to use the 148/149 Wakefield-Pontefract service and get off at Featherstone and use the other services.
Use the 126 service for the town centre bus station. However Ossett is quite spread out and other buses that serve Ossett are the 116, 120 and 122 but these take more scenic routes but do go past some pubs you might want to visit. To get to Healey and the Brewers 1841 and Ossett Brewery the only bus that goes here is the 120 but it takes a massively convoluted route that unless you live on the route in the Wakefield area it is best to catch it to/from Ossett Bus Station, note that it only runs during the day time. The 116 and 122 services will take you close to the Vic and Tap before they get to Ossett Bus Station. They will continue on to Gawthorpe.
The frequent 110 service goes through Outwood although like all Arriva service this applies to the daytime with Evening and Sunday services being less frequent.
Use the 148/149 service which runs every 15 minutes during in the day but evening and Sunday services are less frequent. If you want to go to the Carleton then use the 28/38 Stagecoach buses, get off at the stop before the road splits (the Ackworth Rd Hardwick Rd stop) but if you do find yourself on Ackworth Rd get off at the next stop, the distance between the two stops isn't that much different.
Use the 106 service to get here for the Star and Morton Collins Brewery. Sandal is spread out so if you want to visit all the pubs it is best to use the service between each pub unless you like walking. You can certainly combine visiting here and Newmillerdam at the same time by using the 59 and 106 buses.
The 118 stops outside the New Pot Oil and passes the New Wheel which is a few minutes away.
